Sometimes you just want to clear up your house, get it out of sight, out of mind so to speak. You may have not found a place for it yet but these items aren’t to be thrown away so where can you put such things? Usually, they end up in the garage and after awhile, a lot of things end up in the garage — maybe it’s time to clean it up?
Get all your supplies ready first. Boxes, packing tape, storage totes, heavy duty garbage bags and whatever else you think you may need to get organized. There’s always the option to have a garage sale for items you don’t need or what but are in too good of a condition to throw away — you can also donate these items to a local charity as well.
Label everything you’re keeping. With so much stuff, it can be hard to keep track of what’s staying and what’s going. After you decide what’s staying, label these items clearly. Whatever you keep in your garage should be properly organized and labelled. It will make it much easier for you to always quickly find what you are looking for and know exactly what you do and don’t need. There’s nothing more frustrating then knowing you have something you need but have no idea where it is.
Give it a thorough cleaning. While you might try to keep up with cleaning throughout the year, you really want to clean the garage from top to bottom during your big cleaning. This is your chance to really get everything done since you will be moving everything for sorting. Once you have everything organized and back in place, it will be a lot easier to keep up with the general cleaning. Since there is generally going to be a lot of dirt and dust, you might want to make sure that you are at least wearing a dust mask. Don’t be afraid to get dirty — this is not going to be the cleanest of work but you will be very happy with the result once it’s done.
Clean in between. Once you go through your big cleaning event, you might want to think about doing a few little cleaning sessions throughout the year. Every three months will definitely keep things in tip top shape but even if you do only one every ix months, this will often be enough to keep everything mostly in order.
