Safety First
Garage doors are often overlooked as a point of safety in the home. Sure, the doors tend to big and sturdy, but the garage is often full of valuables like power tools, bikes, sports equipment and lawnmowers. It’s where you park your car, which may be one of your biggest assets!
Your garage door could possibly pose as a weak point in your home. Adding new locks could cause damage to the systems already in place and may possibly void the warranty on your product. In this case, it’s a good idea to contact the manufacturer for their input.
Steps to Safety
Make sure your garage door is always closed.
This seems like an obvious step, but sometimes, when you’re in a hurry to get to work you just forget to check. Some garage doors come with timers, which are programmed to make your garage door opener to close the door after a certain amount of time.
Enhance security.
A motion sensor on your lights can deter intruders from trying to pry open your garage door. Place a few of these around the house, rather than just in one area to cover all of your bases. Motion sensor security cameras are also available, should anyone actually get into your garage, you’ll have video to prove that it happened. An alarm is another measure of security to look into. There are many reputable companies that can set up something reliable and safe for you and your family.
Strong doors.
If you have a connecting door between the garage and your home, a deadbolt on a strong door made of wood or metal can be an effective deterrent to any forced entry.
Upgrade.
Regular use of your garage door can cause a build-up of rust and common wear and tear. This makes your garage more susceptible to break-ins, making it easier to access the garage and/or your home. Proper maintenance can only go so far, and eventually you will need to upgrade your door to something more solid and reliable.
